Project Summary
I created a landing page banner, infographics, and icons to demonstrate the key principles of Universal Basic Mobility (UBM).  I worked with researchers at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies to develop infographics and data visualizations for 2 pilot programs conducted in Bakersfield and Oakland, CA to study the impacts of UBM on underrepresented groups. During the program, participants received free transportation passes so researchers could understand how/if greater access to public transport improved quality of life. Learn more here.

Infographics
Oakland vs. Bakersfield
I wanted the infographics for the Oakland and Bakersfield pilot programs to reflect the modes of transportation, demographics, and unique characteristics of each location. Oakland needed to showcase more modes of transportation (scooters, bikes, Muni, BART, ferry) compared to Bakersfield (scooters, bikes). Additionally, I needed to illustrate differences in demographics between Oakland (older, 39 years old) and Bakersfield (younger, 20 years old). In both cases, participants were low-income and most identified as being black or African-American (30% Oakland, 31% Bakersfield) or Hispanic/Latino (27% Oakland, 17% Bakersfield). I wanted to be inclusive of a variety of races and ethnicities while still staying true to the data and statistics.
This graphic on transportation poverty illustrates how lack of accessible public transportation prevents low-income/disadvantaged groups from accessing basic needs (groceries, healthcare, job opportunities). Transportation poverty negatively impacts one's health and wellbeing because it leads to large amounts of time traveling which can cause social isolation. It can also foster dangerous travel conditions for people traveling in extreme weather conditions or facing excessive amounts of vandalism to e-bikes and scooters.
Icons for UBM Best Practices

This mode shift graphic shows the before/after travel pattern for an Oakland participant. Before the pilot, this person had to make 6 trips to get their kids to school and to get themselves to work. After the pilot, the participant could save time by using BART.
